In the whispering forests of Tehri Garhwal rises Khait Parvat—a mountain cloaked in perpetual mist, lush alpine meadows, and centuries of supernatural folklore.

According to local belief, Khait Parvat is the celestial dwelling of the Aancharis (the mountain fairies and nymphs). Villagers avoid wearing bright red clothes or playing loud musical instruments near its slopes, for the fairies are fiercely drawn to beauty, music, and youthful courage.

In the village of Bagdwal lived young Jeetu Bagdwal, a dashing warrior and master flautist whose tunes could soften the harshest mountain winds. His mother and sister repeatedly pleaded with him never to take his flute to Khait's ridge.

One sunlit afternoon, while tending to his fields and cattle near the high ridges, Jeetu sat under a blooming rhododendron tree. Overcome by the beauty of the Himalayan snow peaks, he pulled out his bamboo flute (Nausuri) and began to play.

The melody was unlike anything heard in the valleys—it carried across mountain gorges, rising into the deodar canopy. Bewitched by the music, the nine sisters of Khait, the Aancharis, manifested from the swirling mist.

Enamoured by his music and handsome spirit, the Aancharis demanded that Jeetu belong to their realm forever. Recognizing his fate, Jeetu negotiated with dignity: he requested permission to return home to complete the autumn paddy harvest with his family before surrendering to the mountain.

True to his word as a Pahadi warrior, upon finishing the harvest, Jeetu returned to the mountain and vanished into the sacred mist of Khait. To this day, elderly villagers say that during the quiet twilight of autumn, the faint, haunting melody of a flute still drifts down from the mountain cliffs.
